Who is Joomla right for?

Joomla was designed to make management of your website easy. It's financially viable because it is open source. The templating and tremendous range of 3rd party plugins mean it can be customised in infinite ways.

It's the perfect solution for;

  • Small Businesses who need a cost effective web solution that they can manage on a consistent basis.
  • Larger organisations who need to allocate different levels of access to staff.
  • Church groups who want to post events and sermons online.
  • Non-profit organisations
  • Schools who need to post information and newsletters on a regular basis.
  • Community groups who want  online events calendars and photo galleries.
  • Online businesses who need an ecommerce system integrated with forums and web content.

Who Joomla is not right for?

When you use a Content Management System like Joomla, a lot of the functionality is predesigned. For example content is organised into Sections, Categories and Articles, user details are stored in a particular format, content articles are made up of intro text and main body text, etc. If you have very specific needs in terms of functionality, presentation and data requirements then perhaps a custom CMS solution is required. However, a custom built CMS solution could take a team of developers months to design, program and test. And the cost could be in excess of $40,000+.

Is it secure?

You bet it is! In the past, opponents to open source technology would state a lack of security as the first reason not to use it. The source code is freely available to every hacker on the planet to analyse, strip apart and find security holes. This is true but it's a good thing. It's the transparency and openness of the open code base which ensures it's security. Read my article about Joomla security here.
